I've been pretty burnt out for a few years, and am considering quitting my job without a new one lined up. I don't feel like I have a particularly good sense of perspective on whether or not this makes financial sense. Some details:
- Family of three - me: 50, spouse: 47, child: 9
- I earn ca. $135k/year salary (pretax, in Euros), plus another ca. 20k from freelance projects
- Current yearly expenses are ca. 75k
- Net worth: ca. 1.7 million
- 970k taxable account
- 550k retirement accounts
- 40k 529 account
- 120k cash
We're American, but living in Europe, so getting health insurance isn't so costly while I'm unemployed. Spouse isn't currently working but is looking. I'm also open to continuing to work, but I'm in a fairly niche field and will almost certainly end up earning substantially less.
I'm not particularly FIRE-oriented, but some of these calculators suggest that I could almost retire completely at this point. This isn't the plan, but does help me to feel better about the idea of quitting this job without a clear plan.
Does this seem rash or reasonable? Anything I'm not considering?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
