Personal Investments • Bond fund investment in a UTMA account

I have two UTMA accounts setup for my kids. They were started through gifts of stock from family. I'd like the kids to have access to the funds for college, buying their first house, etc. I have about 80% invested in equities (VTI, VXUS) but would like 20% in a bond fund (and increasing the bond allocation as they approach time for college). My understanding is that a bond fund like BND has negative tax implications because the UTMA is a taxable account. Is there a bond fund that would work in this case? They both have small 529 accounts and could invest in bonds there but would prefer to diversify the UTMA accounts as well. Thanks!
