Personal Finance (Not Investing) • [What is] Working in Finance Like?

Hi everyone,

I've been flirting with the thought of performing career changes recently -- and even heard one person from university mention they're going into finance.

Heard the following about Finance:
  • The first two years as an analyst are brutal with banker hours but then one can exit into VC/private equity/etc and live a relatively good life
  • It's highly cyclical industry and usually dependent on HCOL locations like NYC and Boston... apparently Dallas is becoming an MCOL center too
Apart from that I don't know much else. Hence the questions:
  • How long term of a career is it? To what degree is it susceptible to being AI-ed away with automated analysis of the markets
  • After paying the high price for the first two years as an analyst, what do the standard working hours look like?
  • How can one know if they're actually really good at it with an inclination and can "make it" versus someone who just jumped on the finance train for the "megabuck hype"?
  • Where can one engage in this industry apart from NYC and Boston? I mentioned Dallas previously, but also maybe Charlotte NC?
  • To what degree is it a mathy profession which requires understanding of mathematical models and calculations?
  • How does one ensure that they aren't burned out in this industry? And to what degree is it susceptible to outsourcing? (I know a bunch of regular IT app support in the private sector is)
Thanks in advance!
