Another graduation season is upon us and another six copies of Bogleheads Guide to InvestingSecond Edition have been gifted. It was three grand-nephews and three family friends this year. Last year my grandson and all of his buddies (all were honors graduates) received, appropriately inscribed, copies. I have been doing this so long I have lost track of the number of copies I have gifted. It started about 15 years ago as Christmas gifts to my daughters. They were both in their 20's and recent college graduates. The younger, more contrary daughter made a comment about it being a less than sexy gift, but definitely thoughtful. She found the enclosed envelope containing cash a little later and decided that was the sexy part.
An informal, totally anecdotal survey of recipients over the years indicate most copies were used to some extent, several were referenced repeatedly. The honors graduates seemed more attuned to the lessons included in the book. My Scientific Wild Ass Guess is: my return on investments must be over a thousand. Plus it is an easy gift to give. One size fits all.
I have read many dozens of financial books, hundreds of news letters and at least hundreds of web postings on finance and investing. I would like to hear if any of this audience knows of another resource comparable to "Bogleheads" as an introduction to investing. Unless I hear of something better, "Bogleheads" will be my go-to graduation gift.
