Wife and I just entered retirement with $2.4M, mostly in IRA/401K. No pension, but both will receive S/S. I start collecting in October and it will pay ~1/2 of our yearly expenses. Plan on wife waiting to at least Full Retirement. 50% in bonds/bond funds at 3% return will basically pay the second half of our expenses. Nice feeling to be able to live off the "interest".
I prefer a somewhat conservative portfolio but 40-50% in bonds seems excessive. Is there a conservative-ish investment that lies between equities and bonds or is ~$1M in bonds acceptable? As stated it would be nice having bills paid between my S/S and bonds. We have no children so look to spend it all.
