Son's 2020 CR-V appears to be totaled (hit and run from last weekend), though we await final confirmation from State Farm, and of course, a check.
Assuming he's in the car market this weekend or next week, he's leaning towards a new Honda Civic* (but also open to various used options).
1) Are Civics or Hondas generally (Hatchback, maybe, mid-trim?) going at MSRP+dest (with or without additional dealer junk fees) or is negotiation possible?
2) Particularly if Civics are scarce/overpriced, is there anything else comparable that he should be considering?
3) Although he could probably pay cash, with the SF settlement on the old vehicle + savings, he might be open to financing, in part for credit-building reasons (he's ~1.5 years out of college).
3A) Do dealers generally, Honda particularly, still make more aggressive deals, if you finance?
3B) If he goes used instead of new, I assume interest rates are higher - do dealers still sweeten the car price to get a finance deal? (He could pay off rather quickly)
(Would he even benefit significantly from a car loan, paid off fairly quickly, on his credit history, if he's house-shopping in 2 or 5 years? Assume the rest of his credit history is fine/standard for a solid earning young person.)
4) If he *does* want to shop used, in addition to the used lots of dealers (especially of the new car dealers), where else is likely to be maximally productive (good deals on a ~$15K used vehicle)? FB Marketplace? Craigslist? Autotrader.com/Cars.com? Carvana and the like (long distance)? Carmax (in-town)?
* Son drove a Civic off and on in HS/early college, and my D/his sister has a Civic hatchback now that we all like. Son doesn't think he needs the size of a CR-V, would probably appreciate a little cheaper, little more fuel efficient, thus the Civic...
