Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Water Filtration / Softening for House

Hello everyone, my wife and I bought a large house 3 years ago and have hard water, and some minerals as well. We've been told by some neighbors, and many contractors, that installing a new filtration and/or softening system will have many great effects - longer lasting appliances, drinking water from every faucet, nice soft water for the shower, our pipes will last longer and be much less likely to ever burst, etc. Having said that, every contractor we talk to has different opinions, different approaches, and pretty much disagrees with much of what the others have to say.

This has left us feeling like it might just be an unnecessary $5-10K expense that doesn't offer us as much tangible benefit as we thought, but I was hoping to get any opinions or thoughts from folks smarter than us that know this better and/or maybe have installed something over the years that can speak to the benefit. We are willing to spend the money if there is value in doing so but right now it is just very confusing more than anything...

Thanks.
