Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Help with Claiming IRS Interest on Delayed Refund

I had started a thread previously viewtopic.php?p=7838971#p7838971, needing help resolving a portion of my tax refund due to me for 2021 tax period. It took over a year but I finally was able to get the rest of my refund.

My local state representative helped me with that (he was working w/an IRS advocate on my behalf).

Now I am trying to gather the interest of IRS sitting on my money for roughly 1.5 years from when they originally got my completed tax return in October of 2022, to when it was finally paid out in April of 2024.

My local representative told me because my tax return wasn't in by January of 2022 (for 2021 taxes!), IRS won't assess or add any interest payment to the long hold on the return owed to me. I filed all correct extensions, and filed timely by October of 2022. IRS did not dispute getting my filed return in October of 2022.

Is this correct information? Has anybody dealt with this issue before? This is still a considerable chunk of money (at least to me), and I see no reason why this shouldn't be paid out to me given the fact they held onto it for so long. Appreciate all the help!
