Last week, I received 4 letters from Los Angeles County Treasurer stating that if I didn't pay the back due amounts below, I would be sent to collections.
Letter 1: $3600
Letter 2: $3250
Letter 4: $3150
Letter 4: $2950
Here's the rub: these bills are for past due property taxes for a home I sold in Feb 2023. None of the single page letters contained any information other than they were for "Unsecured Supplemental Property Tax".
After hours on the phone, it turns out, that when I sold the home, it triggered a reassessment of my property taxes for the time I lived there. The County is now stating that for the four years I owned the home, I underpaid my property taxes due to the fact that the assessor never updated my assessed value to the value of the home when I bought it.
Because of this, I now owe the difference PLUS late fees and collection fees. The entire time I lived in the property, escrow paid my property taxes and I never once had a late payment. And because I moved out of state when I sold the home, I did not get any notifications until quite late in the process about these new found back taxes.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Apparently, CA has the right to retroactively review your taxes for the previous four years you lived there for UP TO four years after you've disposed of the property.
It feels like such a sham that because of their own delay in updating my property assessment, that they would then allow me to accumulate a shortfall and hit me with it nearly 2 years after selling - with fees to boot!
Unbelievable...
