Investing - Theory, News & General • expected stocks dividends on total market funds (domestic and international)

Hello all,

I hold pretty much a three fund portfolio: total US stock fund (45% of total), total international stock fund (15%), total bond fund (20%), and some CDs/money market (20%). My question concerns the predictability of dividend/interest payouts one can expect from such a portfolio. I understand that the interest rate depends on Fed policy and we may soon be back in a world of very low rates. But what about dividend paid by total stock funds such as VTI/SCHB and VXUS/SCHF? I realize dividend yield can be all over the place because of fluctuations in stock prices. But what about actual dividend payouts?

Folks on this board often seem to mention that one can expect about 2% in dividend yield for VTI. Maybe that is a historical average of sorts. Is that a reasonable number to use for planning cashflows during retirement? And what should one use for VXUS/IXUS?

Thanks in advance for your help!
