Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Tracking expenses with minimal effort? Is using a single bank/credit card an option?

What is the best way to get an idea of what you spend money on each month?

I know what our fixed bills are, I keep a spreadsheet to track how much of our gross income we save, and I know we are living way below our means, but I don't track what categories we spend our money on each month.

I'm not sure if that data is even valuable, but it would be interesting to analyze, and it would be valuable years down the road when we contemplate retirement.

I have tried Quicken and gave up. I don't like Intuit's business model and subscriptions drive me crazy. I also don't want to manually track everything in a spreadsheet. Are there any other options?

I know a lot of banks now have the capability of showing you your spending in their app. For example, you can ask BofA's virtual assistant in the app how much you've spent on restaurants in the last month and it'll tell you. I only assume this technology will become better as time goes on.

We've switched banking to Chase and I see that they have a similar setup. Has anyone tried this as a way to track your spending? If you put everything on a Chase card and also used a Chase bank account, it seems like you should get a pretty good overview of your spending habits after about a year?
