Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Didn't apply for SSI but received notice not eligible

DW received a notice from the Social Security Administration that she is not eligible for Supplemental Security Income. She is not eligible and did not apply for it.

The notice says "On September XX, 2024, we talked with you about your eligibility ... Based on that talk, we have made an informal decision that you are not eligible for SSI."

She did talk to someone at SS on that day, but SSI was never discussed. She called because in applying online for spousal benefits, the system said that they had information that was inconsistent with something and she would need to make an appointment to resolve it. She waited an hour to reach someone, who made an appointment. They also mentioned that they would need proof of marriage, and that we could take it to our local SS center and they would scan it into her records, which we have done.

My guess is that something the SS rep we talked to did caused the computer to generate the letter, and we can ignore it. If we had not talked to SS that very day about something else, I would be worried that someone was making a fraudulent application.

Is there any reason we need to address this further with the SSA?
