I recently saw a dermatologist for a minor skin irritation. Derm quickly diagnosed it as an allergic reaction and prescribed a generic hydrocortisone cream. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. Before I could even pick up the cream, the problem was gone in 2 days.
I just received the explanation of benefits from my insurance company. It includes the billing code and associated charge that the derm submitted. The code they used was for “New Patient, 45 minute visit, moderately complex”. The charge (after insurance was applied) was $410.
Nothing about this coding is correct. The visit was less than 10 minutes and quick and easy diagnosis. Consequently, the charge is outrageous.
I am trying to reach their billing manager to dispute, but they aren’t calling me back. Do I have any other recourse?
