Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Why do you want to leave your employer

Hi folks.

How would you answer the interview question, " you seem happy at your job, why are you leaving?"

I am paid well. I love working with my colleagues but I have come to realize my job is a dead end job. I made a lot of progress in my 20s and 30s and quickly made good ranks and my compensation grew massively.

Recently, I have been considered for promotion 2 times but I have been passed on. I strongly believe, many of us competing, offer a solid vision and after 18 years have demonstrated our skills and delivered a ton I.e have a great track record.

I have concluded, that there are two reasons I am not catching a break and might not in the future.

1. the company isn't growing, you are essentially at the mercy of someone retiring
2. My current management is now my x pier group who I once competed with. Unfortunately, I feel I am no longer in the club or in the "right demographic". May be to my immediate management my x piers I am now a threat.

While I am still respected my growth is drying up both monitory and skill set. Being in my early 40s I am very worried about inaction on my part and have been looking outside the company.

So circling back to my question what would you say to a future potential employer who may be a competitor. How can I communicate my aspiration without sounding bitter or disloyal. I have been writing up my answer and wanted to get a perspective from my community. How would you answer this question?

Thank you!

Ps: My wife and I are both trying to earn a bit more to meet our goals. Along with personal aspiration, this is certainly a motivation. I don't think a side hustle will ever get us the type of extra income we are looking for so I much rather find opportunities that will pay well to commensurate a much higher level job responsibility than I am in now.
