[Title was "Post Ablation surgery. One Eliquis pill charged 757 dollars." --admin LadyGeek]

On August 30th wife had second Ablation surgery. Before going home the nurse gave her one Eliquis pill at a cost of $757. There was no discussion or advanced notice in paperwork before hospital visit, before surgery or after surgery about this expenditure. Subsequently, we received a billing statement that Medicare paid everything except the one Eliquis pill. We understand the need for an Eliquis post surgery. But the bill for one pill seemed outrageous. We could have easily brought our own pill, which costs $2.50 per pill. I understand it might be protocol, a checklist for patient hospital release and so-called hospital liability risk?

Suggestions on how to appeal this high cost. We understand why Medicare may not have cover this cost since it’s part of the prescription D coverage? Suggestions for dealing with this bill. We did write to the CEO but no response so far. We tried looking up department heads but no emails were given. We are writing to our Ablation surgeon to see if he is aware of this high cost. Thus, he may not order Eliquis until one is at home. (My wife was same day surgery patient). Please advise how to proceed with a bill of $757 for one pill that only cost $2.50 at the pharmacy. I know hospitals have high overhead but this one line service seemed way too much. Please advise. (Appeal to hospital or Medicare since administered in hospital, ignore bill, negotiate, or other options?) thanks.
