Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Switching college major to materials science and engineering

My offspring is considering changing his college major to materials science and engineering, from civil engineering. I'm an engineer but know very little about materials science and engineering. He's at a solid, private technical school, which has most engineering and science fields.

First, is materials engineering a degree that can lead to a PE licence? (I realize that for many jobs a PE isn't necessary. Still, it's a credential and the programs have to meet accreditation standards.)

I'm mainly wondering about job prospects...and types of jobs for people with a a BS in materials. How is it out there? Is it better perhaps to get a BS in mechanical or chemical engineering and then go into materials from there, I wonder? What are the grad school prospects like? Where could he find some materials types in the working world to talk to?

He likes the idea of making things, and his intro materials course he finds interesting. But it seems like more of a survey course.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
