My GF is looking for a replacement van for hers that got totaled by a deer as I discussed in a previous thread.
She found a 2011;Sienna LE with 139k miles. The seller has it listed for over a month and is asking 10k. KBB and JD sites valued ot between like $8.2k and $9.8k. The Carfax didn't show any red flags so she paid for an inspection. The owner took it for the inspection and the following was found
-Loose grease from passenger outer boot
-Lower Control Arm bushings starting to separate
-Lower oil pan gasket leak
-Front tires 6/32, rear 4/32 , abnormal wear
-Rear brakes 4mm
She's having a mechanic friend go over the list. I think leak can wait depending on how much oil needs to be added every $1k miles. I drove awhile on suspension issues so that may be could wait?
Here are their estimates (it would be cheaper if her friend could do it).
$879 -Right Front Axle Shaft - Remove and replace
$1420 Front Lower Control Arms Remove and Replace
$490 Lower Oil pan - Remove and Reseal
$130 Alignment
How much would you try to get off his asking price? It's an individual seller with no other listings. Has shown her title. His story is he bought for GF and they broke up and wants to get rid of it bc she can't pay him for it. Carfax shows it has one owner till this year and second owner has since March and put about 5-6k miles on it.
He may be unreasonable as he told her he has $12k into it, to which I told her "It doesn't matter what he has into it and the used car market prices have been going lower."
I have no idea how to bargain these findings or how immediate some of these repairs need to be.
I would appreciate any advice you can give us to help with negotiations.
Also she said if she buys, she'd want to meet and the DMV and make the title transfer there.
