Hi,
I have two UTMA accounts for my young kids, each with a balance of roughly $8,400. The capital gains and dividends for each account will be under $1,300 (with room to spare) with no other income in their names.
I have two questions:
1. Will there be no taxes as long as the unearned income stays under $1,300 for each account?
2. Even if there are no taxes owed, should I file a Federal and Georgia State tax return for each child to avoid any potential issues with the IRS? I’m fine doing this, but I want to ensure I cover all bases.
Thanks for your insights!
