In early January, I expect to make a direct transfer of funds from the settlement MMF in my Vanguard tIRA brokerage account to one of the variable annuities in my (existing) TIAA tIRA. Usually, I think, such transfers are initiated at the receiving company. But I had a good experience when initiating a transfer a couple years ago at the sending company (from TIAA to Vanguard) and a bad experience when initiating a 1035 exchange at the receiving company (from my Fidelity after-tax annuity to my TIAA after-tax annuity). Because of these two experiences, I’d prefer, if possible, to initiate the present direct transfer (from Vanguard to TIAA) at Vanguard.
