Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Prescription Drug Scams

Not going to name the companies involved in case it isn't appropriate on this forum but just ran into what I consider to be a scam involving a major U.S. pharmacy.

Found out a prescription we paid $55 for at the pharmacy using insurance could be purchased on Amazon without insurance for $3.88. So I decided I would take advantage of this new service from Amazon and transfer the prescription there. When I did, Amazon warned that transferring prescriptions from this particular pharmacy was experiencing significant delays. So best to give them the name of the doctor who prescribed the medicine.

Not naming names again, but the story wouldn't be complete without telling you that the major insurance company involved was owned also owned by the major pharmacy.

So basically, what we apparently get from our insurance premimums is the benefit of getting to pay higher drug prices.

Also, I learned from looking into this even deeper that the pharmacy is not allowed to tell you if it would be cheaper if you just paid cash for the prescription instead of filing the insurance claim.

You can ask them for the cash price however. This is what I will be doing from now on whenever I get a new prescription.
