Investing - Theory, News & General • What if a fund group failed

So here is a what if question.

We are all familiar over the years with Ponzi schemes (Bernie Madoff) and hedge fund (Galleon, SAC) failures. But what if mainstream firms like Fidelity or Vanguard group were to fail? Or perhaps some of the funds they sell that are managed by others like the Wellington group that manages the Wellesley and Wellington fund for Vanguard?

Am I correct in assuming that Vanguard would need to go under for the Wellington group to fail?

I wonder if these big investment firms would be like JP Morgan to the government. Too big to fail…

Thoughts?

John
