Hi,
I am trying to figure out the best plan for my father and his wife. He is 75 and plans to retire within a few years. His wife is retired and she gets social security which covers their mortgage. Due to health reasons he does not have life insurance so this money has to work for them.
He is looking to invest in his traditional brokerage account through Vanguard, in a conservative safe manner since he is so close to retirement.
He has money in his SEP IRA and it's at a 25% stocks to 75% bonds split.
He has money in his traditional brokerage account at a 60% stocks to 40% bonds split.
For the new money he wants to put into his traditional brokerage account, in today's market, does it make more sense to invest it at a 25/75 stocks to bonds split through Vanguard, or keep it in a high yield savings account that pays 4.5%?
What is the average % return for a 25% stocks to 75% bonds split?
Thank you for your help and advice.
