I'll be moving a significant amount of money soon from my Vanguard Brokerage account into a couple accounts at E-TRADE. I know I could move the money from Vanguard to my linked bank account and then from that bank account to E-TRADE where it is also linked. But I'm wondering if there is a way to skip the middleman and go directly from Vanguard to E-TRADE.
My E-TRADE accounts each have a routing and account number. If I log in and click on Quick Links, "Routing and account number" is a menu option. And if I click there it shows the numbers and says at the top:
"To fund your account, complete electronic transfers, or set up and manage electronic payments, use the routing and account number below.
Please note, the routing and account number is the same for ACH, check, and wire transfers."
That would make it sound like you can do ACH transfers in and out of these E-TRADE accounts using the routing and account number.
However, when I called Vanguard, they asked what the E-TRADE routing number is and said their bank linking system will not accept that routing number.
I asked about doing it the other way - if Vanguard's brokerage account has a routing and account number, could I go into E-TRADE and link that on E-TRADE's side? But Vanguard said that their routing and account number is only for wiring money and you can't do regular electronic transfers/ACH using those numbers.
So is there really no alternative other than paying to wire the money or doing this in 2 steps - first transfer to bank, then from bank to the other brokerage?
(By the way, this thread seems to say you can link between Vanguard and Fidelity accounts. - viewtopic.php?t=401355 )
