Over the last 6 years, here is the pattern
Year1-2: Report to Boss1, manage a team of engineers and execute projects. More work than people could handle.
Year2-4: Report to Boss2, manage a different team of engineers.
Year4-6: Report to boss3, do the same work. Boss3 tells me that this reorg is more to do with company wanting him to take a new role and all his direct reports including me will reassigned.
Now: Report to boss4.
-Boss4 talks ad nauseum about all the things he likes me to do.
-one day the theme is " you have great potential, under utilized",
-a week later the theme is " you and your team are doing a great job",
-again a week later-"I have to see if i can reorg for consistency, in this reorg we need to figure out where you fit". Some days I feel like he is on a power trip and wants to sense a moment of weakness and subordination in me( lead by intimidation tactics).
I gently told him I will continue to add value to company in my current role or in a modified role as he sees fit with more responsibilities or less responsibilities. if it does not work out, I will move on to something else in the company.
Non tech industry. The amount of reshuffling and constant discussions' on how or if there is a need to restructure gives me anxiety. My take is tell me what you want me to manage, I will perform, you review my performance and make a decision if you want to continue with me.
Is this kind of reshuffling or back n forth common in your experience. How did you or would you deal with these situations. Would you be more firm and direct with them or be patient with them and see where things land?
