I’m approaching retirement in a few months and trying to make some decisions on my pension options. I’m retiring early (55) and fortunate enough to have a decent pension from my employer.
There’s no lump sum option, but i can either start the pension right away or defer taking the pension until I’m 62 (or anywhere in between).
The growth rate for deferring is not great (almost any NPV calculation i run tells you to take earlier vs. later), but I’m also trying to evaluate the tax ramifications and it might be worth deferring for a bit to allow for some Roth conversions.
I have Boldin (New Retirement) and I’ve been playing with the Roth explorer. I’ve also been doing some rough estimates with the Dinkytown.net 1040 Tax Calculator, but i was just wondering if there are any other tools i should use to play with different models?
I have some deferred compensation thrown in that complicates the matter a bit.
Just curious if there’s any other tools I should be playing with as i have a couple of months to make my decisions.
