Hi All,
Looking for advice on essentially two questions
1) Do folks who get a work computer use it for their personal life? Is that being frugal, or careless about privacy issues, etc?
2) screen repair on my MacBook Pro was quoted at a minimum of $600. A newish MacBook Air with an M1/2 chip is going for around $1000. Is the upgrade worth it? Screen is useable, but pretty screwed up.
Context:
About a year ago I got slight water damage on my 13” 2019 MacBook Pro screen. It created odd colors, some flashing, and a sort of plaid like effect. I got used to it pretty quickly and have been using it fine ever since. Other folks can’t believe I’ve been using it like that.
The other day, though, I caused more inadvertent screen damage when I left a pen sitting on the computer and tried to close the lid. Now, in addition to the problems above, a 1.5 inche-wide column on the right side of the screen (where notifications pop up, etc) is basically 100% black.
The Apple Store quoted me about $600 for the screen repair, but said it could be more based on the water damage.
I have an external monitor I can use with the computer, but it’s cumbersome and obviously turns it into a desktop rather than a portable laptop.
It’s useable as is, but very frustrating.
Options:
Use my work computer as my personal computer (I’m a high school teacher). (((I received a 2020 “13 MacBook Pro with less ram for work. Because it’s a bit less powerful, I’ve just been using my personal computer for work and personal life. Work, at the time, required I do a lot of video editing (2020 pandemic!) and my personal computer handled it much better. )))
Stick it out with what I got for as long as I can.
Repair the screen for about $600.
Buy a comparable replacement for about $1000.
Thoughts?
