Personal Consumer Issues • Transmission flush costs?

Hey all,

So my in-laws took their 2011 Camry in for an oil change back in December and a transmission flush was called out as a recommended item. Pricing for that was $250 and my FIL was hesitant so sat on it and also asked if we can look into getting a second quote.

Finally got around to bringing his car into another place that I just found out about and have taken two of our cars into in the past couple weeks and thought his pricing was pretty fair. This guy quoted $375 for "basic transmission service" and that includes draining the old transmission fluid and swapping out the filter as well. If we wanted to do a "full flush" then add $150... he explained that the full flush entails pushing *all* the old transmission fluid out that can get stuck in certain areas (I think he said gearbox?) where it normally wouldn't get drained with just basic service.

This is a pretty large price discrepency and I'm wondering why that's the case...

Is there something about the way places do transmission flushes that differs in cost this much? My wife called the first place back and they said the pricing is still the same at $250, and he explained that they drain and flush the system (they hook up a machine that extracts all the fluids or something) and replace the fluid and filter so it doesn't sound all that different.

BTW: both of these guys are independent mechanics and not like a Jiffy Lube type of place. The new guy I've been using is a small-time operation and the other guys my FIL took his car into are maybe a little bit bigger (more staff) but still small-time AFAIK

What should we be expecting to pay in this case?
