My 13-year old son started playing clarinet last year as his band instrument in school. Being a frugal person myself and not knowinig if he would stick with it, I bought a used Yamaha YCL-250 clarinet which part of Yamaha student line for about $200.
DS is asking for a better clarinet because one of the keys is sticky, and he says that when he played on a different clarinet at school, it sounded better.
So I am shopping for a new Clarinet online. The local music store has a very limited selection. I asked his school band director and he recommended a Buffet R13.
I don't know anything about music instruments. I was a little shocked at the price of a Buffet R13. It's about $4500, and is considered a professional instrument. Quite a jump from a $200 instrument.
I learned that there is a group of intermediate clarinets that are made of woods as opposed plastic. It is priced in between student and pro series. One example is Yamaha YCL-450. It retails for about $1700.
My son has been playing piano for many years, and just started playing clarinet last year. He takes private weekly piano lessons during the school year. I think he is decent piano player but has not shown great passion for music. Generally does not practice on his own at home unless he is asked to.
Questions for BH musicians:
Which clarinet should I buy? Chances are that he won't be playing clarinet in college. Is Yamaha YCL-450 good enough? Will he see a noticeable improvement over his used Yamaha YCL-250? Or should I just spend the money on a R13?
Thanks
