Our new window air conditioner (Windmill) has two filters that are to be attended to every three months. There is a very fine metal screen or mesh that covers the whole front intake, which they say should be lightly washed. OK. There is a second, small filter: "For cleaner, fresher air, we also included a removable activated carbon filter, which helps remove odors, smoke, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from the air." This one is disposable and they want us to replace it every three months, and subscribe to a regular purchase plan.
Here's the weird thing.
The activated carbon filter is tiny, maybe six inches square. It doesn't cover the whole intake. It fits into little hooks that are in the center of the big filter. So only a tiny part of the big filter is covered, at a rough guess 25%. 75% of the area is free, leaving the air to go around it, unfiltered, and I can't imagine why it wouldn't.
How the heck does this even work? Does it work? Is it a complete sham?
