A family member, in his mid 70's, may need to have an abdominal hernia repaired. [No pain, but bulging]. I have heard that frequency of performing particular surgeries is often linked to better outcomes. How can a patient find the "leading" hernia surgical centers in the country? He's on traditional Medicare plus what I think is a decent Medigap policy. Are there Centers of Excellence for procedures like hernia repair?
Sorry if this is a naive question. I've been lucky enough personally to have not needed any surgery since a childhood sports injury, so I'm clueless. I'm afraid that if he asks his existing internist, they'll just refer him to the surgical practice at the local hospital even if those surgeons haven't done many of these procedures.
Thanks very much for any help anyone can provide on the proper way to research this. Regards, Patricia MG-er
