Personal Consumer Issues • Gmail or Own Domain Name for Personal Emails?

Wife/I will be changing from my Cable Internet Provider's email addresses to untie me from their internet service, for future flexibility.

Now, do I:

1. use our Gmail addresses (not used now)
Pros:
- no cost
- can access from anywhere
Cons:
- loss of control to possible future Google issues, costs, service shutdowns, unknowns, etc.
- there are/may be some potential privacy concerns using a service like Gmail

2. set up emails on a personal domain name I register at a hosting site (I know how to do this)
- better control of email service
- can have 25+ email addresses
- can create any email name using domain
- more flexibility in email options
- can access from anywhere
Cons:
- about $40 yr total cost, possible future increases (cost is not an issue for this amount)
- renewal needs to be paid each year (can auto renew)
- concerns about any technical issues in future due to aging, capable now
- issues about wife's capability to manage if I am no longer available to manage

Other:
- we do not have a 2nd line of people who can manage if we are not capable in future
- changing emails is always a lengthy & time consuming activity
- if we use our own domain for emails now, we can always change to Gmail or (?) in the future
