I have some call options that I purchased on the open market that are deep in the money. Next month, at expiration it will be ST capital gains but I would like to exercise them early in an attempt to start the clock to stretch the gain to long term. The gain on the call will be moved over to the stock I receive and, if I hold the stock for a year, then it will be long term. That's my understanding.
My problem is that, for this expiration and strike price, I have quite a few lots. It is a specific lot that I want to exercise early. Does anyone have any experience with this? The account is at eTrade and they did not have a spot to specify lots when I attempted to sell the option. Customer service also said lots can not be specified but I do plan to call back to confirm this with another rep. Has anyone ever done with other brokerages?
