Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Is it worth filing these insurance claims?

Our garage wall was badly damaged when a family member hit it trying to park their car. Car door also damaged.

I opened an auto claim. Insurer will pay $1,250. Repair estimate by body shop is $1,500. Our deductible is $1,000.

I opened homeowners claim. Garage wall will cost $3,000 to repair based on contractor estimates. Insurer has not said what they will pay out yet. Homeowners deductible is $1,000.

Both claims with the same insurer. I have home, auto, and umbrella package with them. Total yearly cost of all policies is $5,400. I have a teen driver who accounts for a lot of that.

Is it foolish for me to make one or both of these claims?

My concern is the policy costs will go up as a result, outweighing the payouts. Other than these claims, we have had no claims with our insurer in 20 years.

Thank you.
