I closed down an account with a credit union three months ago to simplify my financial life. Instead of ACH-pushing the compulsory $5 in the savings account I had to keep with them as a condition of membership, they issued me a check for $5 instead. I think I've either discarded the check or never received it.
Can I safely ignore this, or are there any downsides to not requesting they re-send the check and actually depositing it?
I'm curious what happens to the money eventually. And also, I honestly don't want my name appearing on a list of "unclaimed assets" 10 years later on the internet for $5. I've seen those lists before by states with people's names published for all to see.
