Personal Consumer Issues • Help me choose Health Care in VA

Hi everyone,

I’m seeking guidance on choosing a health plan through the Virginia Marketplace for a family of four. Thankfully, we have no health issues, but we're looking for the best options for our situation.

My wife and I are both self-employed, so we don't have employer-sponsored health insurance. For the past two years, we've been enrolled in the Innovation Health Bronze HMO. While the premium costs were lower, the network was quite limited, and for specialist visits (e.g., sports doctor for our kids), we had to go through our primary care provider for referrals, which resulted in a lot of back-and-forth.

At this point, we're mainly looking for:

A larger network of providers
Health Savings Account (HSA) eligibility
No referral requirements for specialists
So far, the plans I've come across seem to be either HMO or EPO options.

For HSA-eligible plans, these are the ones I'm considering:

Sentara Health Plans – The cheapest option, but I’ve never heard of this company.
Kaiser Permanente – About 20% more expensive.
Anthem HealthKeepers – The price is almost the same as Kaiser, but I’m not sure if it’s the best fit.
Any advice on which of these might be the best option, or if there are other alternatives I should consider, would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!
