I have 2 days to make a decision. Here are the factors at play:
- 35 F, relatively healthy. I make all my preventative/annual appointments. Though I had some specialist visits last year (PT, for example).
- I have 1 dependent, 8yr old kid who is also pretty healthy, no known issues.
I currently pay $188 every 2 weeks for my PPO ($176) and dental ($15) healthcare plan. So $376/mo.
The plan is going up to $224 ($212 for PPO, dental stays the same) for this next open enrollment, so a $72/mo change. The medical deductible is $1,400 and OOP max is $4,000. Total yearly expense will be $6,422.
Neither I or my son have any known medical needs for the next year. This is what I have spent on my current PPO plan:

I am considering a HDHP. My company matches the first $1,000. The plan in question is Anthem HDHP (currently have Anthem PPO). The premium will be $110/bwk, so $232/mo for medical and dental. The deductible is $6,600 and OOP max is $8,600. Total yearly expense is $3,870.
I would contribute $144/mo (the difference from my current plan) into the HSA, plus whatever else makes the most sense. I think I could do about $250/mo.
I currently have no mortgage (I rent), no student loans. and CC is under $1,500. I have an EF of $24K. I contribute 10% of my salary (company matches 3%).
I've never had an HSA and think it may make the most sense to take advantage of this account now since I am relatively "healthy" and so is my son. However my fear is that sound will happen and I'll have to pay crazy amount since I actually had 17 claims and the total amount was nearly $10K.
As I am typing this out, I'm wondering if sticking to PPO is best?
