Personal Consumer Issues • Big island - Hawaii

I’m headed to the big island over Thanksgiving. First time to Hawaii. Flying into Kona. Main objective is the state high point, Mauna Kea.

A few questions. Is the trail over Thanksgiving going to be snow packed like most 14ers in CO this time of year?

I got back from hiking across Switzerland on the Via Alpina in September, but have not done any hiking since.

Are there acclimatization hikes up to 10 or 11k feet you recommend if I want to spend some time at altitude?

I’m considering spending time at Barr Camp half way up Pikes Peak the weekend before if this is not possible on the Big Island.

Finally, any other tips for a solo traveler? I will have a car. Any inexpensive lodging places or beaches you recommend or other places to see.

If it helps, I am Bonvoy Titanium but the Marriott options in Kona are definitely high end. I’m more of a hostel type person.

Restaurants to eat at? Hot springs?

I mainly like to spend my vacations hiking, listening to classical music concerts, and exploring inexpensive vegetarian eateries.
