Do you think I should share my 8th grader’s 529 balance with him now? It’s $130k so not enough to go anywhere but should provide many options, particularly since I can add some more out of current income when he’s in college (not sure the amount but probably $10k - $20k / year).
I’m adding $2400 / year to the 529 (reduced contributions recently) as I was targeting 100% for in state and didn’t want to over-save in case he didn’t go out of state. Our flagship is $140k for 4 years tuition plus room and board.
He is a good student and does his homework, but doesn’t seem super excited about school anymore and is more into video games. I’m not sure if the 529 balance number would be motivating or not. What do other bogleheads think? He knows already that we have some savings for college.
