I want to give some money to a relative and am thinking of doing it by gifting some appreciated mutual fund shares I hold, provided the recipient is in a lower income tax bracket than I am (don't know that yet). The shares are in my Fidelity account, and I don't believe the recipient has an account at Fidelity, but does have accounts elsewhere.
How would I go about transferring the shares? There is a large cap gains distribution scheduled with an record date of 15 Dec. Could I make the transfer in time to get it done, and they sell the shares, but that date?
