Investing - Theory, News & General • How to think about bad investments

I just realized/remembered that there are so very many greater minds than mine here. So, instead of just sitting with this uncertainty, maybe the group can help.

I have this one (of many) bad investments I've made and I was talking with a partner of mine in this bad investment and predicting (the value of which, along with a token, will get us a subway ride) that we might be able to "get our money out."

Basically, 4 years ago I invested and it has been a nightmare and if things go as predicted, we could get our original investment back.

He is hopefull and would be satisfied, and uses phrases like "get our money out" or "break even."

Having a solid 9th grade understanding of finance and economics, I am having a hard time NOT looking at it in real dollars.

As such, getting the same $1 back after 4 years is not getting our money back or breaking even. It's a substantial loss.

Now, I understand $1 back is (exactly) $1 more than $0 -- and for that, I am relieved.

I just wonder if the more experienced people here have insight in how to best think about these things?

(I know, I know -- move on and learn from it. I have indeed learned. Moving on appears to be stalled until I "get my money back.")

Thanks.
