Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Car hit and damaged!

This is a cool story: My son's 14-year-old Lexus that I we had given him was hit when a person backed out of their parking spot at the grocery store. It is his first accident. So he took photos before moving the cars as did the other driver and came home. I told him, "Well I've never had to report an accident, so you can figure it out and teach me something." Almost immediately he started getting text messages from the other driver's insurance company.

That insurance company stated they would pay for all damages to his car and to go to a nearby brand new body shop to get an estimate and ultimately to have the work done there. They would also pay for a rental car for him while he didn't have use of his car. Is that common? This is all before he called his own insurance company. When he did call his insurance company, the CSR asked, "So they have accepted all liability? You don't have to deal with us at all! Good luck!"

So he does as instructed, schedules the repair, and gets a nice Jeep Gladiator as a rental.

Today he picked up his repaired Lexus and all is fixed. It wasn't a fender bender because the bumper is all plastic, so no metal involved. The two guys that did the repair work were laughing because when they took the damaged bumper off they found their signatures on the inside: They had repaired this same Lexus back in 2011 when it was only a year old and being leased by Lexus. At that time they both were working for Lexus about 40 miles away. Is that cool or what?

So does your insurance pay for a rental car for the person you have hit? Or only if you have special coverage for that? I thought rental car option was for you if someone damaged your vehicle. Maybe I should add that coverage?
