Personal Investments • Feedback on my current 401K allocation, HSA, and re-balancing my taxable account

Hey y'all!

I'm a new Boglehead. I finished reading "The Little Book of Common Sense Investing".

I'm almost half way through "The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing".

I've been loving everything I'm reading so far. My 401K has always been invested in Index Fund / ETFs from Vanguard.

My father-in-law also does a bunch of investing as well (he's also a CPA so I love picking his brain about accounting).

My company recently switched over to Fidelity for our 401Ks, my current spread is the following, with my father-in-law's recommendations:
  • 50% S&P 500 Index - FXAIX
  • 25% Small Cap Index - FSSNX
  • 25% International Index - FSPSX
I also started investing with a brokerage taxable account. I didn't realize at the time when I started investing with it that rebalancing is a taxable event, as I always ever invested with a 401K.

Finally, I have an HSA that I started investing with. I'd love some advice here as I don't have as many options to funds as I'd like.

For all these types of accounts, I have the following questions. For reference, I'm in my late 20s. I started investing in my 401K since I started working when I graduated from college.

For my 401K:
  1. Is there any benefit to doing the S&P 500 with a small cap tilt? My father-in-law just recommended it because he felt like it should outperform soon.
  2. Is there a good time for me to rebalance my 401K? Or does it not matter because A) I shouldn't try timing the market and B) it's not a taxable account?
I'm leaning towards just rebalancing to the Fidelity 3-fund portfolio recommended on the wiki, although I realized recently that I don't have access to the fidelity total stock market index.

Maybe I could do something like FXAIX (Fidelity 500 Index) 70%, FSPSX (Fidelity Internation Index) 20%, and FXNAX (Fidelity US Bond Index Fund) 10%.

My current options are:
  • FXAIX (Fidelity 500 Index)
  • FSPGX (Fidelity Large Cap Growth Index)
  • PEQSX (Putnam Large Cap Value R6)
  • VFTAX (Vanguard FTSE Social Index Fund Admiral Shares)
  • FSMDX (Fidelity Mid Cap Index Fund)
  • PMAQX (Principal MidCap R6 Fund)
  • PCMSX (Principal MidCap Value)
  • FSSNX (Fidelity Small Cap Index)
  • PMJIX (Pimco Rae US Small Instl Fund)
  • RNWGX (American Funds New World R6)
  • FSPSX (Fidelity International Index)
  • MIEIX (MFS International Equity R6)
  • C & S US Realty P
  • VLNPX (Voya Small Cap Growth R6)
  • A bunch of fidelity target date funds
  • FFGZX (Fidelity Freedom Index Inc Instl Prem)
  • RBFGX (American Funds Bond Fund of Amer R6)
  • AHIDX (American Century High Income R6)
  • FIPDX (Fidelity Inflation Protected Bond Index Fund)
  • FXNAX (Fidelity US Bond Index Fund)
  • GABXX (Gabelli Us Treasuy MMkt)
For my brokerage account:
  1. I don't have a huge amount of money in it and many of my ETF choices overlap (VOO, VTI, QQQ, VT). Should I sell my shares to focus on VTI - so I could do VTI & VXUS (or even just VT)?
  2. Or as I contribute should I just keep on buying more shares of the ETFs I want to focus on so that I avoid taxes?
For my HSA:
  1. Do these choices seem good? I don't have much invested in my HSA, but I hope to add more soon. I recently rebalanced to:
  • 70% VTSAX (Vanguard Total Stock Market Index)
  • 20% VTPSX (Vanguard Total Intl Stock Idx InstlPls)
  • 10% VBPMX (Vanguard Total Bond Market Index InstlPls)
For reference, all the other choices I have are the following:
  • VIIIX (Vanguard Inst Index Instl Plus)
  • VTPSX (Vanguard Total Intl Stock Idx Instlpls)
  • Various target retirement funds
  • VEMPX (Vanguard Extended Market Index Instlplus)
  • VTINX (Vanguard Target Retirement Income Fund)
  • VMIAX (Vanguard Materials Index Admiral)
  • VGSNX (Vanguard Real Estate Index Institutional)
  • VSMAX (Vanguard Small Cap Index Admiral Shares)
  • VBMPX (Vanguard Total Bond Market Idx Instlpls)
  • VWIAX (Vanguard Wellesley Income Admiral)
  • VEMIX (Vanguard Emerging Mkts Stock Idx Instl)
  • VIGIX (Vanguard Growth Index Instituional)
  • VIPIX (Vanguard Inflation-Protected SECS I)
  • VMVAX (Vanguard Mid-Cap Value Index Admiral)
  • VBIRX (Vanguard Short Term Bond Index ADM)
  • VTAPX (Vanguard Short Term Inflation protected SEC idx adm)
  • VSIAX (Vanguard Small Cap Value Index Admiral)
  • VTABX (Vanguard Total Intl BD Idx Admiral)
  • VVIAX (Vanguard Value Index adm)
  • VFTAX (Vanguard FTSE Social Index Admiral)
  • VMGMX (Vanguard Mid Cap Growth Index Admiral)
  • VTSAX (Vanguard Total Stock Mkt Index ADM)
  • VIMAX (Vanguard Mid Cap Index Admiral)
  • VUSFX (Vanguard Ultra Short Term Bond Admiral)
Thank you all in advance, I look forward to your responses. I love talking about all of this, I never thought reading a book about index funds could be so exciting!
