Personal Investments • Is there a net worth where you "should" think about Private Equity?

I am new to investing and have heard some of my parent's friends talking about private equity investment. I am sure that my parents can make their own financial decisions, but for my own clarification - at what net worth "should" you consider private equity investment? I look at the returns of the market over time, and couldn't understand why you would not want to invest in some index funds long term and just increase bond holdings as your risk appetite changes over time.
