Hoping some folks here might have some wisdom to share about the scenario we're thinking about. My wife and are 50 and I'll be retiring this fall. We currently live in the Greater Seattle area. We love it but it's expensive and we've been considering cheaper places. The issue is, we're not really in love with any other area. So, we've come up with a plan to visit the two states we're most interested in (FL and OH) and live what we're calling "nomdically" in AirBnB/hotels while we figure out what we want to do. The idea is, we'll head to FL first and live in a hotel outside of Disney for a month or two. From there, we'll head to OH and do the same thing for a few months. Afterwards, we'll either come back to WA or pick one of those areas to rent a place for a year++.
For insurance, I'll have my company's COBRA which has a ridiculously large network. My wife is healthy but I have several chronic health issues that I'll likely need care for while we do this. Here's where we see some issues which I'm hoping others might have encountered or have advice on:
1. Since I won't have a permanent addrress for several months, will this possibly lead to a denial of care from a provider? We've found services which will get us an address in a state that we can use for mail, so that's the current plan. Just wondering if this will be an issue.
2. Taxes. We won't be in either state more than three months at most, so I don't believe I'll need to pay state income taxes. Especially since I won't have anything but dividend/interest income. Is there a good resource to look into whether this will be a problem? I have an accountant I can reach out to as well but figured I'd throw it out there. Also, is there any known issues with filing my 2024 Federal taxes without a permannent address (assuming #1 cant be easily handled)?
3. We plan on selling most of our items before we leave but will still have a small (read: 1-2 small boxes) of personal family items we'd want to take with us or store somewhere. Any recommendations on which might be better? We worry that leaving these in a hotel will leave them open to theft.
Is there anything else I should be thinking/worrying about? I know there are people who live in RVs and move around a lot, and I've looked over some of those sites for tips but they're not really helpful as many don't do it full time and have a home base they live in outside of the RV.
Many thanks in advance for any help here.
